The history of carnivals in La Paz can be traced back to the early 19th Century, a time when the wealthy families of the region held the festival within the grounds of their properties, where they named the youngest, or prettiest girl as the "Queen of the Carnival".

People here start creating costumes and designs for their own parade floats months prior to the event! The best ones win a considerable amount of money, but of course that's not the only thing that motivates people of La Paz to get so excited about the carnival, it's more about the joy of being a part of one of the most important events of the year.
